When most people think about good health, balance is a concept that rarely comes to mind. However, good balance goes hand in hand with good health. In fact, good balance can benefit neuromuscular coordination, help to isolate certain muscles and muscle groups, help to improve coordination and posture, and can be key in preventing injuries in the future. In fact, good balance is even linked to healthy cognition! Despite all of these benefits, balance training is often overlooked. Here are some easy exercises that you can do to improve balance starting today:

Stand and Raise a Leg

Perhaps the easiest thing that you can do to improve your balance on your own is to stand in your home, near an area that allows you to grab for support if you start to follow (such as near a wall or your couch). Then, simply lift up one leg and see how well – and for how long – you can balance on that leg. You can make things more challenging by closing your eyes. Switch off legs to keep things… balanced!

Participate in Different Athletic Activities

You can also improve your balance by participating in a variety of different athletic activities. These include:

  • Dance;
  • Yoga; and
  • Tai chi.
